Mama Eve was born about the same time as my first son.

I’d suffered a miscarriage the year before, and it completely changed my outlook on pregnancy and birth. I went on a researching binge.

When I became pregnant again, I knew I wouldn’t give birth in a hospital, which is what I had grown up thinking was normal. Instead, my first son was born in the water at a birthing center (almost in the car, actually), and my second son born in the water at home (specifically chosen to avoid getting into a car during labor!).

When my boys were born I kept reading and reading and reading, and I needed a place to write. And this is it.

I write about natural parenting — from healthy pregnancy to gentle discipline and everything in between. I advocate for midwives, home birth, breastfeeding, keeping boys intact, and other peaceful/gentle parenting methods, but I’m first and foremost an advocate for respecting different points of view.

Advertising & Reviews

I earn income from advertisements and affiliation programs. I accept samples for review only from my sponsors, and any advertorial content will be noted as a Sponsor Spotlight.

It’s important to me to maintain the integrity of my values about parenting and lifestyle. I chose my sponsors and affiliates carefully, based on the belief that where and how we spend our money matters. I research companies to ensure they are what they say, and will remove them if I discover otherwise. I appreciate any assistance in keeping me (and them!) honest.

About the author

I’m a freelance writer, mother, and La Leche League leader (although the views expressed in my blog and my other writings are not necessarily the views of La Leche League).

I grew up traveling around the world with my family. My dad is American, and my mother is Thai. They met after the Vietnam War.

My dad was in the military, and we moved eight times before I went to college, including tours in Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

I studied Environment, Economics, and Politics at Claremont McKenna College, and then was commissioned in the Army as a Patriot Missile Officer. I was stationed in Germany and deployed to Saudi Arabia for several months, and served in Kuwait and Iraq during the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I earned my Master’s Degree in International Relations while I served.

After the military I worked as an engineer for a large defense contractor, designing the user interfaces for missile systems. I lived in Massachusetts, then moved to San Diego, where I met my husband — a Navy fireman and drug & alcohol counselor. After we had our first son I became a stay-at-home mom.

When I was pregnant with my second son, we moved to Ridgecrest . . . a small town in the eastern California high desert that’s home to China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station. The only hospital in town has a 40% C-section rate, so I drove 80 miles (one-way) to see my amazing midwife for prenatal visits, and had my baby at home.

I spend my days trying to figure out all the parenting challenges that come with raising two exuberant boys and attempting to keep my house clean.
